Hired Farm Worker
Even though farmers were the most common occupation, most people did not actually own a farm. Land was either very expensive or it was located in unsettled areas. Typically, unsettled areas tended to have a lot of open space without many support systems (like police, government, fire brigades, etc.) in place. Besides the land itself, farm equipment was very expensive and animals were even more cost prohibitive.
